This guide aims to outline the conditions under which the ISO/IEC 24702 Standard may be applied for the purpose of cabling a PROFINET network.

Given the openness of PROFINET, Conformance Class A can also be achieved without actually using PROFINET-specific cabling.

However, PROFINET-specific cabling is absolutely indispensable for any Conformance Class B and C automation applications, as only this form of cabling offers the necessary properties for meeting the performance and availability requirements.

It caused a quantum leap in possibilities in the world of automation. Since this event, PROFIsafe has evolved to become the leading and most comprehensive safety communication technology in the world. PROFIsafe is now progressing toward becoming an International Standard within IEC 61784-3-3. It is the objective of this document to provide a thorough insight into the PROFIsafe technology and the related issues without becoming too engulfed in specific details. It is not meant to replace standards or the official specifications and guidelines mentioned below. Those are definitive and binding.

PROFIBUS is a vendor-independent, open field bus standard for a wide range of applications in manufacturing and process automation. Vendor-independence and openness are ensured by the international standards IEC 61158 and IEC 61784. PROFIBUS allows communication between devices of different manufacturers without any special interface adjustment.

PROFIBUS can be used for both high-speed time critical applications and complex communication tasks. Through its continuing further technical developments, PROFIBUS is still the industrial communication system prepared for the future.
