There has been a wealth of wireless worry today as the WirelessHART vote looms and SP100 does whatever it does. Peter Welander blogged about the former at WirelessHART: Yes or no? Walt Boyes blogged about the dissension in the SP100 ranks at HART v. SP100: the plot thickens.
Taking the worry and work out of wireless is PROFINET using standard WiFi (IEEE802.11a,b,g) and Bluetooth (IEEE802.15.1). Designed from the beginning to take advantage of these standard wireless technologies (not to mention the wired standard IEEE802.3), PROFINET works today. I blogged about an application a couple days ago. I’ve also discovered a technical article that expands on the subject: “Bluetooth in Industrial Automation.”
