As wireless technologies become more robust and reliable, wireless connections become more popular in the manufacturing industry. They open up a wide variety of applications which are very difficult or impossible with regular cabling. Some of these applications might be automated guided vehicles (AGVs), autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), portable control panels, and many more. PROFINET supports WLAN and Bluetooth as part of its specification. PROFINET enables wireless connections without limitations, even with safety messages (PROFIsafe).
This White Paper introduces industrial wireless communications, including an overview of WLAN and Bluetooth. Then, it describes wireless topologies and features available in PROFINET networks.
