WELCOME TO OUR NEW NAME & NEW IMAGE: This issue of PROFINEWS reflects some key changes that have taken place in recent weeks. You'll read more about them below but in summary PTO has aligned itself tightly with the global PI organization, changed its name to PI North America and introduced a new logo and corporate identity. This is the first issue of PROFINEWS North America to comply. We hope you like the design. The content, however, does not change! It includes the same high quality material as before, to help you understand and select the right networking technology for your next product or plant needs. Enjoy!

INTRODUCING THE 'ALL THINGS PROFINET' WEB SITE: A new web site dedicated to PROFINET was launched at the General Assembly Meeting in August (see report below). Called 'All Things PROFINET' the site is designed specifically as a single entry point for prospective users and developers of PROFINET products and systems. It already answers most of the 'how to' questions faced by PROFINET newbies and is structured so that different types of users can find a quick route to the information they need to understand what PROFINET can do, and how the benefits can be brought to life in real applications. Signposts for End Users, OEMs and Device Developers provide a logical route into and through the site, with 'job title' choices acting as the primary guide mechanism. The site is a user-friendly resource that focuses on benefits and delivers easy access to the solutions offered by PROFINET across automation as a whole. Links to deeper technical topics are provided. A control engineer can step through a complete PROFINET project from start to finish. Even IT managers have not been forgotten as they are often a key decision-player in choosing Industrial Ethernet solutions!

NAME CHANGED AT AUGUST GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING: A significant name change for the former PTO in North America was one of the first announcements to be made at the recent General Assembly Meeting in Scottsdale, AZ. Henceforth, the organization is to be called 'PI North America', bringing the North American organization into line with the latest global PI corporate identity.

Executive Director Mike Bryant told delegates that the change reflects the growing global influence of PI while strengthening the 'community' factor that has been one of its most powerful advantages. "We lead with PROFIBUS, and PROFINET is following in its footsteps. By creating a single global presence we raise our game and significantly enhance the market opportunities for all our members, wherever they are around the world," he said.

One of the most keenly-listened to presentations at the GAM was by Connie Chick of GE Intelligent Platforms, who delved deeper into the decision by her company to support PROFINET in future automation systems, solutions and components. Jim Remski of Siemens also delivered a memorable presentation by outlining the needs of automotive manufacturers when transitioning to PROFINET, supporting his assertions with case studies. STILL TIME TO BOOK FREE TRAINING CLASSES: There are still five chances to reserve your place at one of PI North America's 2010 free training classes on PROFIBUS and PROFINET. See the table below for details. A notable item of feedback from a recent attendee was: "Thanks again for a great class!  I thought it was very professional and high-quality all the way around.  It was very well organized.  Even more amazing, it was free!  I felt that it met or exceeded the quality level I would expect from an expensive paid training course." The classes are increasingly booked out, so early booking is advisable.

The list to watch is here

PROFIBUS classes now cover both discrete and process automation, since PROFIBUS handles both types of application with a single protocol. The PROFIBUS class also has more PROFINET content this year. PROFINET classes are focusing on using PROFINET, so when students leave they're ready for their first PROFINET project. The list of training events is maintained here. The schedule, class contents and the amazing added-value content (including the PDH benefits) were recently blogged by Carl Henning here. Table tops by members give delegates the chance to see products and talk informally with experts.

We continually tweak the classes based on feedback and recently reduced coverage of PROFIsafe and functional safety over the network because of low interest. Suddenly we are getting all kinds of questions about these topics; is networked functional safety finally coming to North America? If you want to catch up, there's PROFIsafe webinar here.

(BTW, we had to close the registrations for the recent Cleveland event because we ran out of space.  Toronto now, too! Book early!)

For full immersion in PROFINET and PROFIBUS technology, consider our 4-day Certified Network Engineer classes. They include a class for PROFIBUS PA during 2010!

Finally, we've archived some webinars on other relevant topics here.

PROFINET IN PROCESS:  The special capabilities needed by PROFINET to make it fully acceptable to the process industries are being specified now by PI Working Groups and nearing review. They should be released early in 2011. PROFINET supplements PROFIBUS PA in hazardous environments by providing a high-speed, high-bandwidth backbone for PROFIBUS PA (and other networks) while bringing immediate connectivity to drives and discrete IO. The specialist requirements being addressed are:

  1. Proxies - to connect lower level process buses (including PROFIBUS PA, Foundation Fieldbus, WirelessHART, and others) into a PROFINET network.
  2. 'Configuration in Run' (CiR) - the ability to make changes to a program without stopping the controller.
  3. Time Sync / Time Stamping - self-explanatory.
  4. Scalable Redundancy - PROFINET already has media redundancy but needs to support system redundancy for process use too.

PI North America member GE is participating in the Working Groups to help develop these capabilities.

PLANNING GUIDE PUBLISHED: PI has completed the publication of a three-part Installation Guide to support plant manufacturers and operators in their planning, installation, and commissioning of PROFIBUS networks. Through proper conceptual planning and careful installation, operators can avoid countless errors. The first two volumes ("Cabling and Assembly Guideline" and "Commissioning Guideline") have been available for some time. The latest - PROFIBUS Guideline for Planning - provides an easy-to-use overview about planning PROFIBUS systems. The volume covers both PROFIBUS DP and PROFIBUS PA. The guideline includes the selection of cable types and plug connectors. Information is provided for planning transmission lines using copper as well as fiber optic cable. The guideline also contains tips for estimating bus cycle times and information regarding shielding and grounding of PROFIBUS systems, as well as a document template for documenting plants. The three guidelines can be downloaded here.

COMMISSIONING GUIDELINE FOR PROFINET: This commissioning guideline is available for members and non-members from the PI Website, together with checklists for individual adaptation. Guidelines for cabling and assembly are also available. They describe how to properly install and commission PROFINET wiring and provide practical guidance on the best ways to achieve this. The presentation has been kept as simple as possible. Background knowledge about PROFINET mounting and cabling is not required although, a basic technical knowledge of electrical installation is assumed. The PROFINET Commissioning Guideline is available together with a separate Word-File, which provides protocols and checklists for individual adaptations. Download it here.
