PROFIenergy MAKES ITS SHOW DEBUT: PROFINET has always used green cable ... but now it's officially a green network too, with the addition of the new profile called PROFIenergy. With PROFIenergy, users can actively and effectively manage energy in their automation systems. By purposefully switching off unnecessary consumers, energy demand and, thus, energy costs can be drastically reduced. At the SPS/IPC/Drives Fair in Nuremberg, November, it was announced that the specification is now close to being finalized. PROFIenergy was requested by automotive companies as a means of cutting energy costs and helping meet growing regulatory requirements. Read our PROFIenergy article here.

SPS/IPC/Drives ATTRACTS 48,000 VISITORS: Yes really! This annual automation Fair in Nuremberg in Germany holds a secret many show organizers would die for. What is it? Well, it's compact (though getting larger); it's comfortable; it's supported by all the best and biggest vendors; and it's in a nice city, in a nice part of Germany at a nice time of year. But its biggest plus is that it's relevant, and packed full of great new automation ideas, products and solutions. More than 1,200 companies exhibited, including PI with a large booth. PTO was well represented on this booth ... as the many PROFIblog posts from the Fair attest. Read them here and get a rich flavor of what happened, especially the essentials concerning PROFIBUS and PROFINET.

WHY PROFINET?: Network users have a number of industrial Ethernet implementations available to them. Carl Henning, deputy director of PTO North America, made the case for choosing PROFINET in a recent newsletter. He wrote: "Over the last few months, I've attended more than my fair share of trade shows and training events, and encountered device vendors and users pondering an industrial Ethernet solution. This prompted me to summarize the case for choosing PROFINET". Carl's five most important criteria are:
  • Performance
  • Scope
  • Widely Used
  • Globally Supported
  • Certification

You'll find the full details here.

MAJOR VENDORS UNITE AROUND FDI: To accelerate deployment of Field Device Integration (FDI) in the process industries, key suppliers have agreed to join the organizations already engaged in the evolution of this tool, which unifies the benefits of FDT and EDDL technologies for device engineering and integration. ABB, Emerson, Endress+Hauser, Honeywell, Invensys, Siemens and Yokogawa will join the FDT Group, Fieldbus Foundation, HART Communications Foundation, OPC Foundation and the PROFIBUS Nutzerorganisation to become the ‘FDI Cooperation’. The addition of key equipment vendors extends the resources available for completion of the project. The vendors have also agreed to support FDI in their systems and products. The finalization of the FDI specification is scheduled for mid-2010. PTO Executive Director Mike Bryant said: “It's great to see significant progress as users have been calling for this technology for some time. The direct involvement of system suppliers will greatly accelerate the integration of FDI into process control systems and create confidence and investment protection.”

BLOGGING AND TWEETING WITH PTO: As well as featuring extensively in PROFIblog, the SPS/IPC/Drives automation Fair (see above) was the focus of many Tweets from Carl Henning (right). Carl is now regularly broadcasting from just about anywhere he happens to be, automation-wise. To stay abreast of all the best in PROFIBUS and PROFINET, check his output here.

*Tweeting? It's is a short broadcast posting from www.twitter.com which you can pick up on your computer, PDA or smartphone. PTO is using the service more and more to alert automation readers to relevant news topics fast.

MIKE BRYANT: PTO's founder in 1994 and still its Executive Director today, Mike was one of the key people who began the internationalization of PROFIBUS at a time when it faced severe competition outside of Europe, not least in North America. Mike had the vision to see that an elegant fieldbus solution, addressing both factory and process automation equally, and backed by the world's best automation vendors would have a future globally if marketed correctly. The fact that PROFIBUS is today the world's most widely used fieldbus is just reward for his hard work and dedication over the past 16 years. Mike is also Deputy Chairman of PI, the umbrella organization of the worldwide community of 26 Regional PI Associations, of which PTO is a member.

PROFINET I/O DELIVERS LESS THAN 1ms: A new Axioline real-time I/O system for control cabinets has been launched by Phoenix Contact. The system has IP20 protection and is optimized for PROFINET. Response times of less than 1 ms can be achieved thanks to an offset of 1 µs per I/O module. The I/O system is simple to handle: the PIT direct connector system for wiring without tools and outlets at both sides of the station ensures transparent cabling in the control cabinet. An integrated I/O tester reads in the station via a USB interface without requiring an additional network or additional control, and tests the inputs and outputs. PHOENIX CONTACT
