DEBUNKING THE MYTH

POLLY'S BEEN QUIET! Polly is our myth-busting guard who stands ready to correct mis-information about PROFIBUS and PROFINET. A few minor 'SUE' issues have been overheard recently but generally the airwaves have been quiet. As a result, Polly has stayed on vacation, though she remains on alert! Maybe you've heard something worthy of attention? If you have, email us and we'll send our intrepid myth-busters to investigate. It can be anything - a presentation slide that puts down PROFIBUS, or an article on the web that attacks PROFINET. A small token of our appreciation will go to the person who points out an item.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF (PROFIBUS) TIME: Geoff Hodgkinson, the UK-based editor of PROFINEWS NORTH AMERICA and its international big brother PROFINEWS, has been involved with PROFIBUS, PROFINET and PI since the early 1990s, and has hence 'seen it all'. In a rare by-lined article Geoff gives his view of what made PROFIBUS successful. Good technology and a great 'community' are keys, he says, but good leadership plays an important role too. Read Geoff's thoughts.

PROFINET (AND PROFIBUS) TRAINING: Carl Henning (right) PTO's PROFINET guru says: "One of the main functions here at PTO is the provision of education on all aspects of fieldbus and industrial networking, particularly PROFINET of course. Each year we visit up to 30 locations across North America delivering training classes, seminars and workshops for PROFINET and PROFIBUS. I particularly enjoy meeting the diverse range of people we attract, and we encourage lively interaction as I believe it contributes greatly to the learning experience. We also offer on-line learning via webinars and web-based training. The PROFI Interface Center (PIC) in Johnson City, TN, (they provide detailed technical support for product developers), are usually involved too, to provide deeper technical insights. There are possibilities for all - please check the options below."

  • PROFItech classes:The last PROFItech class of 2009 (for gaining PROFIBUS Certified Engineer status) has some seats left!  We'd like to fill them.  If you are a member, you get a discount!  The last 2009 session is November 16-20. Download the PROFItech brochure here .

PROFIenergy COMES TO A BOIL!: PROFIenergy is a new vendor-neutral energy saving profile for PROFINET, aimed at network-supported energy optimization in large manufacturing plants. The Automation Initiative of German Automobile Manufacturers (AIDA, comprising Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and Volkswagen) asked PI to provide suitable network mechanisms for PROFINET. Saving energy can be achieved in many ways. The most obvious is shutting off all the power though this is usually only possible during idle times. But what happens during shorter breaks when equipment continues running and and so consumes energy even in the absence of value-adding activities. Over an extended period, switching off a device for even 30 seconds can be worthwhile in cases such as lasers. It’s possible to go even further. For example, in today’s automotive industry, several car models may run on the same production line, so it might be possible to respond to fluctuations in sales by selectively shutting down model-specific portions of the plant. This degree of selectivity is not easily achieved and needs sophisticated management. PROFIenergy will facilitate new and forward-looking energy policies for AIDA. Standardized network commands will instruct devices to move into various energy-saving modes. It's now in final review and presentations of its scope will be given at SPS/IPC/Drives in Nuremberg, November 24th - 26th. Download our White Paper on PROFIenergy

BLOGGING AND TWEETING WITH PTO: PROFINET is the fifth Beatle of automation and a star in its own right - at least that what a recent PROFIblog claimed. It also has a good ring it added - star, tree and ring in fact! The blog also reports that a large number of North American device manufacturers are adding PROFINET to their products now. Additional information for this kind of need has been created offline for developers. Read the blog to find out how to get this. You can Tweet with Carl* these days too.

*Tweeting? "In case you don't know, a tweet is a short broadcast posting from www.twitter.com which you can pick up on your PDA or smartphone. For PTO its a fast way to distribute news items and PTO's Carl Henning is using the service more and more to alert automation readers to relevant topics."

QUANTUM DP-V1 MASTER: The PROFIBUS DP-V1 Master Communication Module (PTQ-PDPMV1) enables Schneider Electric Quantum processors to access field data from up to 125 PROFIBUS DP slaves. Field Device Tool (FDT) and Device Type Manager (DTM) standardize the interface between systems and field devices to simplify configuration and to assist in asset management. For applications that cannot afford downtime, Hot Standby allows the PROFIBUS network to be controlled by two Quantum/Unity processors so that should the primary power source fail, the secondary module will switch into primary mode in less than 300 milliseconds. The module supports 1536 bytes of acyclic I/O data transfer. PROSOFT TECHNOLOGY

THE INSPEKTOR CALLS!: Softing has a new firmware version of its PROFIBUS-Inspektor available as a free download. PROFIBUS-Inspektor detects even subtle, initially uncritical deteriorations in network communications by continuously monitoring the network traffic against a set of 'fieldbus-health' indicators, with individual thresholds for alarming. If maintenance action is required, the tool automatically alerts maintenance staff. It attaches to a network without interfering with operations and does not occupy a PROFIBUS address or require a change in a PLC program. Just connect, says Softing! SOFTING.
