GENERAL NEWS

ONLINE GAM: PTO’s annual General Assembly Meeting (GAM) was postponed this year in deference to the economic situation. But it took place anyway - on the web! The one-hour virtual meeting included status reports and a look ahead to 2010. About 40 member companies joined the meeting and listened to reports about PTO’s highly successful range of marketing projects, which touched nearly 500,000 people in 2008. Members also heard that there are now 620 Certified PROFIBUS Engineers in North America. Afterwards many emails were received congratulating PTO on the event. In accordance with PTO tradition a (virtual) pool party was held during which a cake celebrating PTO’s 15th birthday was cut (see above and Video here). Online Margaritas were on offer too! KRAKOW MEETING SUCCESS: We summarized the 21st annual meeting in the southern Polish city of Krakow in our previous newsletter but here are a few more pertinent facts. The five-day meeting brought together 21 RPA Chairmen and staff from around the world, plus representatives of Competence Centers (PICCs), Training Centers (PITCs) and Test Labs (PITLs). This ‘conjunction of the stars’ resulted in the largest gathering for many years.

A roundup of reports by RPA Chairmen included a presentation by Dileep Miskin (right) from the UL Group in Pune, India, who said that interest in PROFIBUS and PROFINET was “huge” and that around 20 companies had expressed their intent to join a local association. Steps were being taken to establish an RPA now, he said. Product Developer Training workshops had taken place in March and a Competence Center is being set up.

Dariusz Germanek (right) Chairman of host country Poland provided excellent hospitality during the week, including visits to a salt mine (!) and walks around the old parts of Krakow. He said that his RPA is celebrating its 5th anniversary in 2009 and that cooperation with universities is one of the most important activities in Poland. Later, Max Felser from Switzerland underlined this by presenting proposals for supporting universities in better ways. It was decided to create a kind of virtual ‘PROFIBUS / PROFINET University’ at www.profibus.com.

The strategic international collaborations that are a key part of PI’s activities also received attention. As well as the ECT/FDI (Electronic Device Description Cooperation Team/Field Device Integration) and PROLIST projects Jörg Freitag presented PI’s aims for wireless communication and the progress made by the Wireless Cooperation Team consisting of PI, Foundation Fieldbus and the HART Communication Foundation. Freitag also reported on the status of the IO-LINK project and its goals, and gave details of the new initiative to develop an Energy Management profile for the active optimization of power usage in high energy devices such as laser equipment, welders and robotic systems.

BLOGGING AND TWEETING WITH PTO: PROFIblog was taken on vacation by Carl Henning recently and he reports that you can't easily forget engineering when you see sights such as Liberty Enlightening the World or the bridges, dams, power plants and observatories in Arizona.  Recent blogs note that attendees at training classes are starting to ask for more competitive comparisons (that's in hand now) and - interestingly - about CBA, the component-based way of implementing PROFINET. The Blog now has an easy-to-remember web address. You can Tweet with Carl* these days too. In fact, if you followed Carl on Twitter, you would have been alerted to a new blog posting about three PROFIBUS application stories and three new PROFINET products!

*Tweeting? "A tweet is a posting to www.twitter.com of 140 characters or less.  It's another one of those social networking sites that is widely used by people in industrial automation and it's basically a very fast way to distribute short news items."

PROFIpeople - FACES IN THE NEWS

Two new staff have been appointed at the PI Support Center (PISC) in Karlsruhe: Tina-Maren Weith (left) and Kathrin Holzer (right) joined the PISC earlier this year. You may remember that Kathrin was featured in our video introduction to the PI booth at Hannover Fair back in April.

A first time visitor at the PI meeting in Krakow was Rodrigo Pinto Cárdenas (below, right) from Chile. Cárdenas's company, an automation consultancy called RPI, is a PTO member and runs the PI Competence Center in Chile. RPI supports regular training sessions and is a distributor for companies such as Siemens and PROCENTEC.

APPLICATIONS

CZECHIA / WATER: Endress&Hauser has completed a project involving an automated control system for waste water neutralization. The whole project from design to commissioning took less than six months. Acidic waste water is pumped from tank cars into input tanks and from there transported to tanks where the neutralization is performed using lime milk. The dosage of lime milk is controlled by the pH value of the waste water. The neutralized water is then pumped from the tanks into a filter press where solid substances are separated. The neutralization control system is based on the ControlCare system solution from Endress&Hauser and is based on PROFIBUS DP and PA. PROFIBUS was chosen particularly for its simple system management and for the savings that can be made on cabling. Measured values of levels, pHs, pressures, temperatures and flows are transmitted to the system by PROFIBUS PA to a PROFIBUS DP network via a segment coupler. The low power consumption of the instruments enabled the use of only one PROFIBUS PA bus segment. PROFIBUS PA was designed for hazardous area use and also for powering instruments over the bus. CINCINNATI / PACKAGING WITH PROFINET: When Jacobs Automation developed its PackTrak linear drive system, it had an interesting problem. Customers loved the flexible linear drive system with straight and curved modules that can be mixed to form unique motion paths, but they needed the motion profile of Packtrak's innovative movers to be synchronized with fast updates to existing rotary servos and conveyors along the packaging machine. They also said that for them to use PackTrak successfully it would need to work under a central motion control platform. A PROFINET IRT (Isochronous Real Time) solution with PROFIdrive was suggested. PROFIdrive runs on top of PROFINET to standardize the communication between drives and controllers and has very fast real-time updates. It could also easily be programmed into PackTrak's drive software. In fact, PROFIdrive turned out to be flexible enough to allow PackTrak to virtualize itself as a rotary motor. Jacobs Automation was quickly able to release a highly flexible control architecture for PackTrak featuring a SIMOTION controller. The product received acclaim at the PackExpo 2008 in Chicago and will be on display at the PackExpo 2009 in Las Vegas. The Company plans to release the PROFIdrive device software as a separate SDK to facilitate development of 3rd party drives into standard motion control platforms. JACOBS AUTOMATION.

CHOSEN BY CISCO FOR PROFINET: Cisco Systems has selected Softing's conformance Class B-ready PROFINET stack to enhance its IE 3000 Series Switch family with PROFINET IO capabilities. Softing's extensive experience in writing portable, high-performance protocol software helped tip the scale. After testing PROFINET IO implementations from multiple vendors Softing's software was the only solution found to be flexible enough for embedding in Cisco's runtime environment. Softing's PROFINET protocol stack has a unique design feature that merges all hardware and operating system dependencies into one easy-to-modify, flexible, porting layer. Typically, it takes only days to adjust this to a given hardware/OS combination! Software engineers do not need to touch the actual PROFINET implementation. The main benefit of this 'clean' separation is that future firmware maintenance (e.g. a change in the PROFINET specification) is easy and straightforward. The Cisco® IE 3000 Series Switches are PROFINET V2 certified, with PNO conformance Class B compliance.


WORLD NEWS

UK: The ‘Practical Aspects of PROFIBUS in Process’ course travels to Scotland in October and there are free places to be claimed! A 'call for papers' has been issued for the 2010 Conference. Send proposals to The Papers Committee at uk@profibus.com no later than 30th November 2009. INDIA: The first ever one-day PROFIBUS Product Developer Training workshops in India took place in Pune in March, organized by the UL Group, which is setting up the first PI Competence Center in India. JAPAN: The Japanese PROFIBUS Organization (JPO) held its annual road show ‘PROFIBUS Day 2009’ in Tokyo, Osaka and Kita-kyushu during July. There were over 220 participants. This year there were more users than in the last three events. Further technology seminars will be held in the fall. AUSTRALIA: RPA Australia has established its first PICC at Tyco Flow Control, which is offering training and support on the eastern side of Australia. There are now over 80 certified PROFIBUS Engineers in Australia. BRAZIL: More than 40 professionals from member companies participated in a special sales training class in July. Held in São Paulo, the goal was to train sales personnel in PROFIBUS DP, PROFIBUS PA, Drivers, Profiles and AS-i technologies. GERMANY: A new PICC has been established at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences. Shown right are Terezia Toth and Juergen Welter (itm Munich, the first auditors), Max Felser, ( Bern University of Applied Sciences, PICC chair and second auditor), and Sabina Hein and Prof. Dr. Frithjof Klasen from the new PICC.


NEW PRODUCTS

PROFINET INTERFACE: Industrial Control Communications has released the OPC-E1-ETH multi-protocol Ethernet interface for the Fuji Electric FRENIC-Multi family of inverters.  Key features include support for PROFINET IO, configuration and real-time parameter monitoring/control via an embedded web server and XML Configuration File Upload/Download via FTP. Parameters have their own unique 'fail-safe' conditions in the event of a network interruption and there are twenty individually-configurable alarms to monitor inverter registers and send emails when a certain condition is detected. FIBER OPTIC INTERFACE: Since the release of the Fast Start Up version of the netX chip, the automotive industry is requesting a Fiber Optic interface, says Hilscher. Hence netIC, a tiny serial to PROFINET Interface in the DIL32 form factor. It connects any device with RS232-, SPI- or I2C-Interface to the proposed transceiver AFBR-5978Z from Avago Technologies, including its diagnostic lines. The LVPECL driver and all other active components are on the module. For fast prototyping an evaluation board together with a schematic are available. HILSCHER or +1 630 505 5301.

INTRODUCING THE SLOT PLC: Hilscher has also announced what it calls the ‘slot PLC’. netPLC is based on the netX chip and combines the CoDeSys soft PLC with PROFIBUS or Ethernet communications in a single slot PCI card. Hilscher says: “It’s the first ready-to-use PLC platform combining the advantages of a soft and a hard PLC into one autonomous hardware platform.” All software components are included and there is ample memory for mid and high end applications. USB and parallel ports are used for configuration and maintenance. The card is externally powered so is unaffected by PC stops or resets. HILSCHER or +1 630 505 5301.

ENCODER FIRST FOR PROFINET IRT: POSITAL’s OPTOCODE line of encoders has received the first ever certification for PROFINET IRT. The encoders support IRT (Isochronous Real Time) operation as well as real time (RT) and non-real time (NRT). Data transfer is according to the V4 encoder profile and cycle times as low as 1ms (IRT) and 10ms (RT) can be achieved. A GSDML device file facilitates configuration. Existing PROFIBUS systems can be easily migrated since the same device profile management is used. FRABA

COMMUNICATION ADAPTER FOR FLEX AND INTEGRA: ProSoft Technology's PROFIBUS DP Communication Adapter (3170-PDP) is a slave that allows up to eight Rockwell Automation FLEX and/or Integra I/O modules to interface directly with a PROFIBUS DP Master/Scanner. The 3170-PDP module is easy to use, requiring only the setting of the node address and the connection of 24VDC power. The FLEX and Integra module data images are configured using standard PROFIBUS tools.
